An extension is a formal request that requests additional time from a tax authority to file a return. Provisions differ from state to state, but an extension characteristically gives a taxpayer an additional six months to file a personal income tax return.

A state tax extension that does not extend the time to pay any tax that is due on the return, then you must send the payment to what you expect that you owe at the time of the extension file. In many states, taxpayers can use the extension form as a tax payment voucher to send to the state for the tax filing deadline.

Alabama

The Alabama Department of Revenue automatically gives a six-month extension of time to file a return, so you have until October 15. Payments can be remitted by the April deadline using the Form 40V payment and checking the Automatic Payment Extension box.

Arkansas

The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration gives a 180-day extension of time to file a statement upon request. Arkansas honors a Federal extension as a valid state extension. You don’t have to also request an extension if you file the federal form with the IRS.

Submit Form AR1055 by April 15, if you are only requesting an Arkansas extension or remitting a payment to the state.

California

The California Tax Board Franchise gives an automatic six-month extension of time to submit until October 15. Victims of fires in California 2019 can potentially benefit from additional tax exemption.

Send Form 3519 until April 15 to send an extension payment. Electronic funds transfer payments can be made online through the FTB website.

Colorado

The Colorado Revenue Department automatically gives a six-month extension of time to file on October 15th, but at least 90% of your Colorado tax must be paid by April 15th so as to prevent penalties. Interest is assessed on any payment made after April 15th.

File Form DR 158-I with payment until April 15th to send an extension payment. Payments can also be sent online.

Delaware

The Delaware Division of Revenue gives a 5 ½ month extension to file a claim upon request. Submit Form 1027I by April 30. The extension can be submitted by mail using the paper form, or it can be filed electronically.

Colombia District

The District of Columbia Office of Tax Revenue and gives a six-month extension of time to file for October 15. Fill out email Form FR-127, or file using your online property system on April 15. Payments can be sent using Form FR-127.

Georgia

The Georgia Department of Revenue gives a six-month extension of time to file until October 15th Fill and mail form IT-303 with the Georgia Department of Revenue Processing Center up until April 15th, and attach a copy of the same extension to your tax return when you file it.

Georgia will also allow a copy of the federal extension as a valid application for a state extension. Fill out and send form-560, in addition to form-303 to make a tax payment.

Hawaii

The Hawaii Taxation Department gives an automatic six-month file hour extension to October 20, if you expect to have a refund, have no tax liability, or have already paid all of your tax liability for the year. Extensions can be submitted electronically as well.

Submit your payment along with Form N-101A by April 20 if you need an extension and you expect that you have a tax liability for the year. Hawaii does not allow federal extension forms instead of a state application.

Idaho

The Idaho State Tax Commission gives an automatic six-month filing time extension to October 15 if an individual has paid a minimum 80% of their estimated tax liability or 100% of the previous year’s tax liability. The tax payment can be sent using Form 51.

Electronic payments by ACH debit, credit card or debit card can also be sent online.

Indiana

The Indian Revenue Department gives an extension for November 15, if you file for a federal extension and you do not owe taxes to the state. You can get an extension if you pay at least 90% of your tax liability for the year and file the IT-9 Form. Extension payments can also be made online

Iowa

The Iowa Department of Revenue gives an automatic six-month file hour extension to October 31, if you have paid at least 90% of your state’s tax liability for the year. You can remit a tax payment using Form IA-1040V, and payments can also be remitted online.

There is no way specifically for an extension, and the state does not recognize or honor federal exemptions.

Kansas

The Kansas Department of Revenue acknowledges the federal extension. You will be automatically given the same extension for your Kansas state return if you file for one with the IRS. Affix a copy of your federal extension to your state return at the time of submission. Kansas does not have its own form of filing extension.

You must pay at least 90% of your state taxes for the current year. Payments can be remitted using Form K-40V. Check the appropriate option for extension payments.

Kentucky

The Kentucky Department of Revenue gives a six-month extension of time to file to October 15 if you have already applied for a federal extension. Just add a copy of the federal extension to the Kentucky return.

Tax payments can be submitted using Form 40A102. Form 40A102is  unavailable on the Kentucky DOR website, but you can obtain a form from any Taxpayer Service Center or by calling 502-564-3658. Form 40A102 can also be filed through e-tax preparation software.

Louisiana

The Louisiana Department of Revenue gives a six-month extension of time to file to November 15, but only allows extensions through its online filing system. The state no longer allows forms of paper extension. Tax payments can be remitted electronically.

Maine

Maine service revenue gives an automatic six-month extension of time to file a tax return, and additional time may be given if the request is made in writing. The total extension period cannot go beyond eight months, however. Tax payments can be remitted using Form 1040EXT-ME.

Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Department of Revenue gives an automatic six-month extension if you are due a refund or if you have no fiscal responsibility for the year. You can submit Form M-4868 by mail or online if you owe a tax and want to file for an extension.

Massachusetts requires that at least 80% of its current year’s tax be paid by the April deadline. The payment can be sent together with form M-4868. You must file for an extension using your online systems if you are not making a payment or if you are making a payment of more than $ 5,000.

Michigan

The Michigan Department of the Treasury acknowledges the federal extension if you send them a copy of your Federal Form 4868 requesting more time. The state will give you a 180-day extension if you file Michigan Form 4 if you don’t apply for a federal extension, and if you pay your current year’s state tax.

The state will not honor all extension requests that are received without payment if you owe tax. You do not have to apply for an extension if you are filing a claim to claim a refund.

Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Revenue offers its residents an automatic six-month extension to file until October 15. Residents are required to pay at least 90% of their current year’s tax on penalties to prevent. You can use their payment services online, if you need to make a payment.

Mississippi

The Mississippi Department of Revenue acknowledges the federal extension, whether you expect a refund or whether you will not have to pay taxes to the state. Affix a copy of your federal extension when filing your state return.

You can also fill out form 80-106 or you can use their online services, called TAP, to pay with the Mississippi Department of Revenue.

Montana

The Montana Revenue Department has automatically offered six-month file time extensions since 2017. You don’t have to submit a form or make an immediate payment. Use the Express Income Tax status if you want to make a payment or tax return to the IRS.
